The Interview

Frum maintains "her cool" and continues on with the interview while asking the questions she felt were important and stayed calm throughout the interview by asking what she wanted to hear and not taking offense to Sandra Good's comments about Frum's interviewing skills.
The outcome of Frum being more aggressive or confrontational would lead the interview going nowhere, Good would have gotten more upset with her and no information would have been told, no answers that Frum was determined to get wouldn't have been received.
One question that Frum asked that I felt was a very effective question was when she asks "Ms. Goods, how come your talking about trees that you care about yet you don't care about killing men?" this question through Good's off and it shows a small side of Frum's frustration with her.
Things to remember when either preparing interview questions or doing an interview are to stay on the topic and remain calm and keep trying to get the answers you want. As a student journalist you can learn these same techniques from Frum that will get them through an interview that "went wrong".
As a student journalist if I had to interview somebody I would choose George Jones a country music artist, he was the king of country music. I think this interview would not be tough because I have listened to his music my whole life and I know many things about him so I think I would know now the right questions to ask.

Caught in Lies

When reading articles or any pieces of writing there has always been times when I wondered if they had been factually incorrect or fabricated, when reading a piece of writing everyone should take into consideration whether it is believable or not. For example, the person who is reading the article could have their job on the line, the article could be suggesting whether next year or a few months down the road the job could be put on hold and that person would be thinking that they are going to loose there job, when in actuality it could be a false article.

I was surprised reading these articles and finding out they were fabricated news. For the article "Jimmy's World" I was especially surprised to find out that someone would go to the trouble of making up such a catastrophic lie just to get recognized more.

Yes I agree with Shafer's assertion, people who want that publicity would do anything to get there, so for the people that do not have the talent or the ability to get a good story they will go to a great extent to get that good story but soon the story's will fall out.

Given what Shafer said, I think that colleges and universities should take into consideration that each student should each have a great deal of ability towards articles and story's, each student should have the talent to write story's without having to lie or make up fabricated news.

A newspaper ombudsman is a great way to find out whether an article or story is factually incorrect or fabricated, it is also a great way to let readers know that there is someone out there that will insure of what you are reading is true or not.

Work Assignments: Reflecting and Planning

This semester in Journalism 120 I have worked on many assignments in the classroom and also with my partners in Peoples Picks Keisha and Maghen. Doing these assignments have helped me understand journalism a lot better.

Working with Peoples Picks we gather the information up for the student, teacher, and staff of the week, we also have been asked to do Middle School student of the month. With doing these tasks we must do a write up for each of the previous topics to post on the Blackville Talon and also take the pictures of each person that was nominated.

While doing these assignment I have learned many things, but there are also ways I could improve. I could improve in adding more details in the write up, and have a planned action on how to get all tasks finished in a faster way, which would leave us time in class to do our classroom work as well. Also I could improve on working harder to get the work done and not procrastinate in class. From now on I will continue to try and work harder to achieve my goals in class.

Hurricane in Northern New Brunswick

On Sunday, October 6th a major hurricane hit the Maritimes doing a tremendous amount of damage to the Betterville community.

Everyone in the community was devastated from the damage that was done. Small buildings and garages were torn apart, cars were smashed by the tumbling trees and strong winds.

Thankfully there was only minor damage done to the houses. Some shingles were torn off and shutters were thrown off the house and laying all over the yard.

"This hurricane did not only do damage to the community but also to the people in the community" says officer Dan Maverick.

The local news team was also gathering information about this tragic storm. Judy Smith, the news reporter says "this storm is the worst I have seen in all of my reporting days".

One year late the Betterville community was back on track, also the people in this community are finally feeling better and are hoping that a storm like this will never come again.

Starting with the Basics

Article #1: Saint John fire leaves family homeless
On Sunday a fire chased a mother and her son out of their house. The fire damaged the Killam Properties building on Davenport Avenue, and the Red Cross is helping the family until they figure what there next step will be. CBC received their information about this tragedy from the Saint John fire department.

Article #2: Teen stabbed after breaking up assault in Saint John
On Saturday a 17 year old teenager was stabbed when he intervened in a street assault. This incident happened on Peters Street in the uptown area. The boy was said to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, he seen at least two older men, aged 29 and 56 beating up the third man on the street. These men were charged with aggravated assault, the teenager is suffering non-life threatening injuries, and the police do not know the condition of the original victim. All information collected from CBC was from Sargent Peter Fres.

Article #3: Wild bear breaks into Moncton Zoo, kills deer
On Monday morning a wild bear broke into the Magnetic Hill Zoo in Moncton, and killed a Reeves muntjac, a certain breed of a deer. It is very unfortunate for a wild animal to get into the zoo because there is a seven foot fence around the whole facility. "We do not find skunks and raccoons who find their way under or over our perimeter, but in my 24 years at the zoo, I have never seen a large wild animal enter the facility." general manager Bruce Dougan said. This information CBC received was from Bruce Dougan.

Journal Entry #1 - First Newspapers

The first Canadian newspaper was printed on March 23, 1752. This newspaper was called the Halifax Gazette, printed in a small print shop on Grafton Street in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The shop owner's name was John Bushell, who is said to be the first person to publish a newspaper in Canada, while in actuality it was Bartholomew Green who intended to print the first paper as early as July 1751.

There are many differences between today's modern newspapers and historical newspapers. for example, the length in the newspapers has increased and so has the content itself. The first newspaper was printed on just half of a single foolscap sheet, and todays newspapers have many pages. The paper has also changed where it used to be printed on a foolscap sheet, and now its available on both physical paper as well as on the internet. The actual content has changed by some newspapers being just about local news while other larger newspapers can be about anything happening in the world.

Publick Occurrences was forced to shut down because they were critical of the government. I do not think that the government should have that kind of power or control today because the publishers are speaking their minds and should have the right to say what they want to. Yes I was surprised to find out that the first newspaper was printed in Halifax because it is a small community, I didn't think they would even have the right equipment to print the papers. You would assume that the first newspaper would be printed in a larger province like Ontario or Quebec, where they have a greater population and more money.
